From the Library:
Greetings from your new librarian, Stacey Schubert. Just a little background information on myself:
I am married to Sean Schubert, a teacher at the King Career Center and also an author!! We have 14 year old twins who are in 9th grade at South. Originally I am from Indiana, getting my teaching degree from Purdue University. We moved to Alaska in 1993. I taught at Chinook Elementary from 1997 - 2017, grades 2-5. This is my first year as a librarian. I'm loving it and Fairview! Please let me know if I can help in any of your library needs.
Starting Monday, Sept. 25th, students should start bringing home their BINGO sheet. Its intention is to improve motivate students to read more at home. The rules are on the back of the paper. Basically: each box = 1 book. A book cannot be used for more than one box. 6 BINGOs = small prize; 12 BINGOs = a bigger prize. Adults should initial that students read that book. Adults & older siblings CAN read to the younger children to help them complete the sheet. Please e-mail me if you have any questions: email@example.com OR stop by and see me!
We were lucky enough to get a grant that paid for 10 new bean bags for our library. Students have started using them in library class. We sure are enjoying them!
Battle of the Books:
The Battle of the Books is a statewide Alaskan reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Alaska Association of School Librarians. The goals of the program are to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension, and promote academic excellence. Students read the books, discuss them, quiz each other on the contents, and then compete in teams of not more than three students to correctly answer questions based on the books in a "quiz show" format.
Ms. Kim will be coaching the 3rd/4th grade Battle of the Books and I will be coaching the 5th/6th grade Battle of the Books. We will get started in October. The battles will take place Feb. 28th for 5/6 & March 1st for 3/4. The books are in the library now though. If your child thinks they might be interested, they can start reading them and get a jump start. Stay tuned for more information.
